Torticollis/neck stiffness in babies

Torticollis:

Have you noticed your child turns their head to only one side? Does your child tend to tilt their head to one side? They may have a torticollis which is a shortening of some of the muscles on one side of the neck.

Common signs:

· Head tilted to one side whilst laying on their back

· Elevation of shoulder on one side

· Turns head more consistently to one side

· Skin irritation or redness on one side of the neck

· Back of head on one side is flatter

· Difficulty reaching and/or weight bearing through one arm (observed more after 5months of age)

Why it is important to intervene?

More mild torticollis presentations do have the potential to correct themselves. However, most cases require targeted intervention to address the underlying muscle tightness and imbalances in muscle strength. Such issues can lead to challenges with sitting balance and crawling if left untreated.

If your child fits the above presentation or you have any concerns about your child’s development contact the practice today. We can provide expert advice and a targeted program for bub if required. Call 0423 157 013 or email totstoteensphysio@gmail.com
