Is your child still not walking?

Updated: Oct 20, 2021

My child is not walking yet. Should I be concerned?

Working across various paediatric settings over the past 7 years, this question comes up frequently. Is your child approaching the arbitrary 18months old and are yet to show signs of being close to walking?!

The most recent data captured by Australian Early Development Census in 2018 showed that 8.5% of preschool aged children’s motor skills were delayed to the point that they were classed as developmentally vulnerable. That is, the delay in motor skills would be significantly impacting their day to day age appropriate develop and independence (AEDC,2018).

In the globalised community we now live in there is never a shortage of advice givers from grandparents, friends and complete strangers on the internet. Conflicting or confronting information comes thick and fast and can be overwhelming to navigate. If you hold concerns for your child’s developmental it is always better to follow this up. Always trust your instincts as you are the expert when it comes to your own child.

Motor delays in children occur for a number of reasons. This can be down to muscle strength, genetics, environmental aspects, the child’s personality or an underlying medical consideration. At the core of “Tots to Teens Physio” is the desire to educate and empower families to support their child so they can live meaningful and active lives.

If you are concerned about your child’s developmental status, book in an appointment today.
